Lots of love to my big cousin @jamaal_jay for letting me use his studio space to film a few videos 🥰 I actually managed to film 3 videos which is unheard of.

At home by myself it’s me doing 20 outtakes before I give up and start again another day 😭 But I took my own advice and snapped up Jamaal’s offer to help out. And oh my gosh, how much easier was that? 🥰

I totally underestimated how much I could get done in such a short amount of time.

Jamaal recently produced Burning Hands - a drama series which is available to watch on Mohammed Hijab’s YouTube channel 👏🏾

Eating Disorders Don’t Discriminate! Yet the eating disorder recovery space often doesn’t reflect this reality.

Last month I was invited to be on a panel of guest speakers at this year’s Royal College of Psychiatrist’s International Congress in Edinburgh.

The topic of our session was “eating disorders do not discriminate”. And I’ll be honest I was pleasantly surprised by the high level interest in the room (we literally couldn’t get through all the questions).

I was honoured to be able to contribute to a conversation that moved us beyond saying that eating disorders don’t discriminate. More specifically, to be a voice for not just Black people but Black people who exist across multiple intersections of marginalised identities.

We need to see systemic changes if we are to make sure that eating disorders are not only treated but prevented across all races. And that the care for those who are suffering is not only accessible but sustainable.

Getting someone to seek help for their eating disorder is one thing. Providing a safe and anti-oppressive environment to heal within is a real challenge.

Thank you to Dr Chuks (author of Eating Disorders Don’t Discriminate) for bringing this much needed and important conversation to this year’s congress.

And thank you to fellow panel members Nadia Craddock, PhD and Lee Chambers. Sitting alongside these three and us just bouncing off one another sent a powerful and unified message.

There’s work to be done (as a community), but I have hope 🩷

June dump | Seeing as the sun won’t come out to play, I thought I’d reminisce on the summer we had in June (yes, I’m being dramatic) 😜

1: Me and my family out for some family time. We had our cousin @melnicole120 here all the way from NYC. Earlier that week we had laid our beautiful cousin Michelle to rest 🕊️ Seeing all my family together reminded me how important it is to make time for each other. Absolutely love my family 🩷

2 I was a panel guest speaker Royal College of Psychiatrists International Congress in Edinburgh. The topic of the discussion was Eating Disorders Don’t Discriminate. I’ll be posting a separate post on this tomorrow! ✍🏾

3 I had the best bread ever @mayvncafe in Edinburgh. I loved it there so much I came back for a piece of cake before I took my train back to London 🥰

4 Rose Street Edinburgh…at night! 😅 I just thought it looked pretty. I really enjoyed mooching around the city.

8 I got back in my groove (kind of) and filmed some Pilates for my little YouTube channel. If you like beginner friendly Pilates that’s not focused on aesthetics, check my channel out! 🎥 I would love to put more content out but I’m accepting what my capacity is. Rather than swinging between all and nothing, I’m doing what I can whenever I can outside of running my business.

But there’s so much that I love about those walks and so I make it a top priority to go every Sunday at the very least.

Bringing nature into your daily life or spending time in green spaces can benefit your mental and physical health. Studies have shown that spending time in nature can help with mental health issues like anxiety and depression. Research into ecotherapy (a formal treatment that involves doing activities outdoors in nature) suggests it may be beneficial for mild to moderate depression. Combining regular physical activity with social contact and being outside in nature may be the key to this benefit (Mind UK).

In terms of mental health benefits, nature has a very broad definition. In addition to green spaces such as parks, woodlands, and forests, it can also include blue spaces like rivers, wetlands, beaches, or canals. Trees along a residential road, private gardens, and even indoor plants or window boxes could be considered ways to connect with nature. In fact, even watching nature documentaries has been shown to be good for our mental health (Mental Health Foundation, 2021).

Nature is all around us but to really get the true benefits of being in nature, we need spaces that are accessible and spaces where we feel safe (i.e. from risk of physical harm, sexual harassment, hate crime or discrimination).

I personally like finding quiet green spaces where the only people you come across are other walkers (who tend to be quite friendly). Other options include finding a walking buddy or a group where you feel welcome such as @blackgirlsdorunuk Black Girls Hike @bgh_uk or Coco Collective (Ital Communty Garden) @cococollective_org
